The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Summary

Journalist Mikael Blomkvist, who just lost a libel case brought on by the corrupt billionaire Hans-Erik Wennerström, awaits his 90-day jail sentence and ultimately takes a leave of absence, leaving his half of the stake in his political magazine Millennium, to co-owner Erika Berger, who is also Blomkvist’s part-time lover.

At the same time as Blomkvist’s verdict, the top investigator at a prominent security firm, Lisbeth Salander, brings a report to lawyer Dirch Frode. Frode represents Henrik Vanger, a retired industrialist in his eighties. To the satisfaction of Vanger, Salander produces a clean background check on Blomkvist, who she believes was framed.

For 37 years, Vanger has believed that the disappearance of his young grand-niece, Harriet, was suspicious. He hires Blomkvist to investigate the disappearance as a guise for writing a biography of the family’s history, not to create suspicion among the family. Blomkvist’s clean record leads to Vanger offering him a job. If Blomkvist proves Vanger’s hunch is correct, he will double Blomkvist’s payment and bring forth irrefutable evidence of Wennerström’s corruption and set-up.

To complete Vanger’s task, Blomkvist moves to the small island of Hedeby and takes occupancy in Vanger’s guesthouse. As he pokes and prods around the family’s records and dealings, Salander comes across murders that are similar to Harriet’s. Knowing Blomkvist is investigating the Vanger family, Salander formulates a plan to work alongside Blomkvist, and through their investigation, a dark and horrifying family secret comes to light.

The final chapters contain a huge plot twist and seamlessly set The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo up for a second installment. You won’t see this ending coming, and it will leave you on the edge of your seat!

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Review

This is such a great book! It is more in-depth than other thrillers like The Woman in the Window or The Silent Patient and has an unforgettable plot twist like that of Gone Girl.

Larrson dug deep into details while writing The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. His writing style gave you such a close glimpse into the life of the characters, almost as if you were right there alongside them. The intricate details keep the reader’s interest throughout the book’s entirety. Larsson did a great job at moving seamlessly through time and making it easy for the reader to follow along

Though there are graphic and dark scenes in this book, I didn’t find them overly sensitive. For someone with sensitivities to sexual abuse and murder, I would do more research before reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Final Thoughts

If you are looking for a good mystery or thriller book, I recommend you give this one a try! It’s longer than most, but it is absolutely worth the read!
