The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks

February 12, 2023

You know those books where you’re confident you know precisely what will happen, but as it turns out, you’re way off? Yep, that was me while reading The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks. While reading, I was captivated by the story and even grew to like the antagonist until around the end of the book.

What you think you know, you don’t. What you assume will be wrong. Who is good and who is bad will keep you guessing.

“Gaze detection, it’s called—our ability to sense when someone is observing us. An entire system of the human brain is devoted to this genetic inheritance from our ancestors, who relied on the trait to avoid becoming an animal’s prey.”

The Wife Between Us Plot Summary

As with most good books, the narration of The Wife Between Us switches from the viewpoints of Vanessa and Nellie.

Nellie is a preschool teacher preparing for her upcoming wedding to Richard, a successful businessman. In college, Nellie’s life was affected by a traumatic event, and recently, her anxiety has grown as mysterious things begin happening to her. Though what is happening makes her nervous, she knows she can seek comfort from Richard.

Vanessa Richard’s ex-wife is a woman who doesn’t have much to show for her life or herself. She lives with her Aunt Charlotte and spends most of her time obsessing over Richard and her “replacement,” as she calls her. When Vanessa hears of her ex-husband’s engagement, she flies off the handle.

As the story progresses, the narration shifts swiftly between Vanessa and Nellie. Their timelines start to intermingle, and eventually, Vanessa’s past and trauma come to light. Finally, we are introduced to a character named Emma, who is seemingly innocent. But like I said before, assume nothing!

Emma manages to sneak her way into the main plotline in a way you won’t expect.

The Wife Between Us Review

The Wife Between Us is a terrific psychological thriller. Now that I’m on my twelfth book this year, and psychological thriller/mystery is my favorite genre, I easily calculate who the good guy, the bad guy, the guilty, and the innocent are. Throughout the entire book, I was wrong.

The plot twist in this novel is one you will remember!

The Wife Between Us Final Thoughts

If you like mystery/psychological thriller novels that aren’t dark or include a lot of murder, this is a great option for you.

I’m a margarita-mixing, kitten-rescuing, plant-hoarding, pumpkin-spice-everything-obsessed, homeschooling book lover. You can pretty much always find me in my favorite chair, under my cozy knit blanket, with a good book.
